Welding masks
Welding masks are most commonly used in arc welding processes such as shielded metal welds and gas welding. They are needed to prevent arcus, a painful condition in which the cornea is inflamed. Welding masks can also prevent retinal burns, which can lead to vision loss. Both cases are caused by unprotected exposure to highly concentrated ultraviolet and infrared rays emitted by welding. Ultraviolet emissions from the welding arc can also damage exposed skin, causing a burn condition in the relatively short period of welding. In addition to radiation, gases or splashes can also be a hazard to the skin and eyes.
